iPad Companion App

The iPad app includes the core helm functions and adds a map-centric control station for strategic decisions without weakening command acknowledgement.

What The App Handles

  • All core helm functionality from the main UI display is available in the iPad app.
  • Mode and maneuver commands include queued and acknowledgement feedback.
  • WORK mode entry, exit and status stay visible.
  • Waypoint and route operations are separated into dedicated pages for clarity.
  • Track-map views and CSV exports support post-passage review.
  • Automatic local track logging runs every 10 minutes when underway, including position, heading, speed and weather, and is visible and exportable from app workflows.
  • Weather tactical pages and corridor visualization are built in.
  • Sail recommendations and early-squall advisories appear as actionable guidance cards.
  • Settings and configuration are stored centrally, so changes are shared across the main screen, all UI/LCD modules and the iPad app.

Traffic, Alarms And Safety Workflow

  • AIS/RADAR warnings are shown in app-level alert context.
  • Alarm acknowledgement stays synchronized with helm state.
  • The obstacle-avoid flow includes an explicit resume-route action.
  • The design keeps warning handling fast and unambiguous offshore.
  • Night-focused warning design supports earlier reaction when visibility is reduced.

Scale And Engineering

  • Built as a full native app for operational reliability.
  • The codebase now exceeds 20,000 lines and continues to evolve.
  • Total active module code is now above 240,000 lines, excluding external libraries.
  • The UI keeps control concepts consistent with the helm display logic.
  • It is designed for quick use under fatigue and at night.
  • From a software perspective, multiple iPads are effectively unlimited; the practical limits are network capacity and onboard operating policy.

Near-Term Roadmap

  • Dual-camera ingest, bow and aft, to assist incoming-wave prediction.
  • Video-informed sea-state cues feeding the advisory layers.
  • A tighter connection between camera cues, weather context and prevention recommendations.
  • Expanded tactical overlays for ocean-passage decision support.
