Autopilot Failure And Emergency Steering
Autopilot failure is not always steering failure. But if the boat suddenly needs a tired person to steer, the safety problem starts immediately.
The first job is to slow the boat, balance the sails and work out whether the failure is only automation, the drive unit, or the steering system itself.
First Principle
Make the boat steerable before looking for the clever fault
When the autopilot stops, the temptation is to look at menus, wires and error codes. First make sure the boat is under control. Hand steer if possible, reduce sail, avoid accidental gybes and put the boat on a course that gives time.
First actions
- Take the helm and confirm the rudder actually controls the boat.
- Reduce sail if the boat is overpowered or carrying heavy weather helm.
- Choose a safer course angle that reduces rolling, slamming, broach risk or accidental gybe risk.
- Keep traffic, land, shoals and sea room in mind before going below.
- Wake or call crew early. Steering fatigue builds fast.
Find out what failed
- Only autopilot control failed: hand steering still feels normal.
- Drive unit failed: wheel/tiller may work, but the autopilot cannot push the rudder.
- Steering system failed: wheel turns strangely, rudder response is weak, jammed or gone.
- Power or sensor failure: autopilot may be healthy but has lost voltage, heading, rudder angle or network data.
Sail balance becomes the spare autopilot
If the boat is balanced, a tired skipper can steer with small corrections. If the boat is overpowered, every wave becomes work.
- Reef the main if weather helm is heavy.
- Reduce or change headsail if the bow is being pulled around or the boat is rolling hard downwind.
- Move the traveler, ease the main or change course to reduce rudder load.
- A small amount of weather helm is useful. Large weather helm is drag, fatigue and broach risk.
- Lee helm is dangerous. If the boat wants to bear away by itself, fix the sail plan and balance.
Shock cord for very short singlehanded moments
Singlehanded, there may be a moment when the skipper must step below for a tool, clothing, chart, radio or quick inspection while still hand steering. A short length of shock cord, often called bungee cord, can be useful if it is already within reach.
The idea is not to lock the rudder hard. The idea is to hold the wheel or tiller near a chosen position with some elastic give. If a wave loads the rudder, the steering can move a little instead of being held against a hard stop.
This is usually kinder to the steering gear than using a hard center lock or wheel brake as if it were an autopilot. It also makes it easier to return to the helm and take over immediately.
A shock cord is only a short pause helper, not a watchkeeper and not an autopilot. Use it only after reducing sail, checking traffic and sea room, and only for the shortest possible time.
Emergency tiller
The emergency tiller is not ready if it is buried, corroded, missing a pin or impossible to fit in a seaway. It should be tested in calm water before it is needed.
- Know where it is and how it connects.
- Clear the access before bad weather if steering loads are rising.
- Prepare lighting, tools, gloves and a way to hold position while fitting it.
- Expect high loads. The emergency tiller may need tackles, lines or crew rotation.
Inspect what you can safely inspect
Look for loose steering cables, quadrant movement, broken pins, hydraulic leaks, chain/cable problems, jammed drive arms, water around electronics, low voltage and overheated drive units.
Do not put hands near moving steering gear while someone else is steering. Say clearly when the wheel or tiller must not be moved.
If steering is partly lost
If the rudder still gives some response, slow down and keep loads small. If the rudder is jammed, broken or gone, the boat may need emergency steering from sails, drogues, warps, an emergency rudder, engine thrust or outside assistance. That is boat-specific and should be practiced or at least planned before a passage.
- Reduce sail and avoid high-speed surfing.
- Try to balance the boat with sail trim before using brute force.
- Consider heaving-to if the boat can do it safely.
- Prepare a drogue, warp or sea anchor only if it fits the situation and gear is strong enough.
- Call for advice or assistance early if land, traffic or weather reduces sea room.
Fatigue is part of the failure
A working autopilot hides how tiring steering can be. Once it fails, the passage plan changes. Hand steering for hours or days may be possible, but it needs rest, food, water, clothing and a conservative sail plan.
Do not wait until the helmsman is exhausted before reducing sail. A slower balanced boat may be the fastest safe way home.
Steer the boat first, diagnose second
A calm boat with reduced sail is easier to diagnose, easier to repair and easier to keep safe than a fast boat demanding perfect steering.
