Engine Failure Under Sail
A sailboat can sail without the engine, but not every place gives enough room to solve the problem calmly.
Engine failure becomes dangerous when it happens near a lee shore, in traffic, at a harbor entrance, in strong current, or when the crew assumed the engine would be available.

Engine failure: sail the boat first
A stopped engine is often manageable if the boat is still sailing safely. The danger grows when all attention goes below and nobody manages sea room.
1First 30 seconds
- Keep sailing under control and protect sea room.
- If close to danger, prepare anchor or a clear sailing escape before troubleshooting.
- Do not let the boat drift beam-on into waves, rocks, traffic or shallows.
2First 5 minutes
- Check fuel level, fuel shutoff, air in fuel line, battery, kill switch and cooling intake.
- Remember that heavy heel and low fuel can make the engine suck air instead of diesel.
- Call for help early if sailing options are closing.
3When stable
- Bleed fuel only when the boat is under control.
- Prepare tow lines, fenders and a slow harbor-entry plan if needed.
- Log the fault and what was done before restarting normal use.
First Principle
Do not assume the engine will be there when you need it
It is easy to think of the engine as the backup for everything: harbor entrance, no wind, lee shore, charging, tight anchorage, man overboard, bad weather recovery. But engines usually fail at inconvenient times, not during a planned lesson.
A sailboat should still be handled as a sailboat. The engine is useful, but it should not be the only plan.
First actions when the engine stops
- Keep control of the boat first: sail, steer, slow down or heave-to if appropriate.
- Check sea room, traffic, depth, current, lee shore and wind direction.
- Prepare the anchor if shallow water or shore danger may arrive soon.
- Call early if drifting into danger or blocking traffic.
- Only then diagnose the engine if the boat has enough margin.
The engine room is a poor place to be if the boat is quietly sailing toward rocks, traffic or a harbor wall. Get time first.
Common simple causes
Many engine failures begin with basic things. The point is not to become a diesel mechanic in a panic. The point is to check the likely causes in an order that does not waste the safe time you still have.
One fuel problem is easy to underestimate in a sailboat: too little fuel in the tank while the boat is heeling hard. In heavy weather, or just after a period of heavy heel, the fuel pickup may suck air instead of fuel. Then the engine may not start, or it may start and stop, and the fuel system may need bleeding before it will run again.
- Fuel tank valve closed or wrong tank selected.
- Too little fuel in the tank for the heel angle: the pickup may suck air, especially in rough weather or after heavy heeling.
- Air in fuel line or blocked fuel filter.
- Dirty fuel stirred up by rough weather.
- Flat start battery or poor battery connection.
- Raw-water seacock closed or intake blocked.
- Broken belt, overheat alarm, oil alarm or exhaust problem.
If this happens at a bad time, do not disappear into the engine space too early. Keep the boat sailing safely if possible, find sea room or a safe anchoring place, and only then bleed the fuel line if that is what your engine needs.
Raw water and exhaust
Cooling water deserves special respect. If the raw-water seacock is closed, the engine may overheat quickly. If the engine is cranked too long without starting, some wet-exhaust systems can fill with water.
- Before starting, know whether the raw-water seacock is open.
- After starting, check that cooling water comes from the exhaust.
- If there is no cooling water, stop and investigate.
- If the engine has been cranked for a long time, think before more cranking.
- If heavy following seas may have pushed water into the exhaust, be extra careful.
Near shore or in traffic
This is where an engine failure can become serious quickly. The boat may still be perfectly seaworthy, but the available space is disappearing.
- Sail away from danger if there is room and wind.
- Anchor early if depth, bottom and traffic allow it.
- Use a second anchor if dragging would put the boat aground or into another vessel.
- Call harbor control, coastguard, marina, nearby vessels or rescue services early.
- Prepare tow lines, strong points and fenders before help arrives.
- Do not enter a narrow harbor under sail unless you have the skill, room and permission needed.
There is no shame in stopping early. The shame is drifting into a situation that could have been held at a safe distance.
Test before the hard place
Before entering a difficult harbor, current gate, narrow pass or lee-shore approach, it can be sensible to check that the engine starts and runs normally while there is still room to sail away.
- Start early enough to find a problem before the entrance.
- Check cooling water, charging and unusual vibration.
- Confirm gear engagement if safe and appropriate.
- Keep sail ready until you know the engine is reliable.
Closed seacocks need discipline
Closing a raw-water seacock can be the right protection in some situations, but it creates a human-memory risk. If the engine is needed quickly, a closed cooling seacock can become its own emergency.
- Use a tag, checklist or cover on the start button if a cooling seacock is closed.
- Tell the crew out loud.
- Write it in the log if the boat is in passage mode.
- Make the next start check impossible to skip.
If the engine will not restart
When the first simple checks do not solve it, change from "repair mode" to "safe boat mode".
- Choose a sailing plan that gives time: heave-to, sail offshore, slow down or hold position if possible.
- Reduce sail if the boat is overpowered or the crew must work below.
- Save battery power for radio, navigation lights, instruments and bilge pumps.
- Prepare anchor, tow gear and emergency steering if the approach will become difficult.
- Call for advice or assistance before darkness, tide change or weather makes the same job harder.
After heavy weather
Rough motion can create engine problems even if the engine itself is healthy. Fuel dirt may be stirred up. Water may appear where it should not. A belt may loosen. A hose may chafe. A seacock may have been closed and forgotten.
- Check fuel filters and water separators.
- Check oil, coolant if fitted, belt tension and leaks.
- Check raw-water strainer and exhaust water flow.
- Check engine mounts, shaft seal and unusual vibration.
- Check charging and battery voltage.
- Log anything weak, repaired or temporarily bypassed.
The engine may be needed after the weather, when crew are tired and land is closer. That is a bad time to discover that the system was damaged hours earlier.
Spares and preparation
Useful spares are the ones you can find and fit. A perfect spare part hidden somewhere unknown is not much better than no spare.
- Primary and secondary fuel filters.
- Impeller and gasket.
- Belts.
- Engine oil and coolant if relevant.
- Hose clamps, short hose pieces, tape and plugs.
- Tools that actually fit the engine.
- A written note for bleeding fuel if your engine needs it.
