Fishing Gear, Nets And Lines Around The Propeller: First Actions, Drift Control And Safe Clearing
A line around the propeller can change a normal passage into a steering, engine, drift and diving problem.
The dangerous moment is often the first minute: the skipper tries the engine again, the line tightens harder, the boat drifts toward danger, and nobody has yet made a calm plan.
First Principle
Do not make the wrap tighter
If the engine suddenly changes sound, stops, loses thrust, vibrates badly or the boat passes close to fishing gear, assume something may be around the propeller until proven otherwise.
The instinct is often to try forward, then reverse, then forward again. Sometimes that clears light weed. Sometimes it winds rope, net or fishing line tighter around the shaft, damages the seal, bends something, or makes the engine stop in a worse place.
First actions
- Put the engine in neutral immediately.
- Do not keep using power if there is heavy vibration, no thrust or a clear wrap.
- Check wind, drift, current, depth, traffic and lee shore.
- Sail the boat if possible and safe.
- Prepare the anchor early if shallow water or danger is close.
- Call early if the boat is drifting toward danger or blocking traffic.
- Only start clearing work when the boat has enough margin.
As with engine failure, the first repair is often sea room. Get the boat out of immediate danger before disappearing below or over the side.
High-Stress Use
Make the first decision before the repair
A fouled propeller feels like a mechanical problem, but the real danger is often drift. Before tools, diving or engine tests, decide how the boat will stay safe for the next ten minutes.
Warning signs
- Sudden engine load, vibration or change in exhaust note.
- Engine runs but boat has little or no thrust.
- Gear engagement feels abnormal.
- Propeller shaft area makes noise or the engine stalls when gear is engaged.
- Visible line, buoy, floating rope, net, pot marker or fishing gear near the stern.
- Autopilot or steering suddenly works harder because the boat is slowing or yawing.
Common sources
- Lobster, crab or fishing-pot lines.
- Floating rope from moorings or fish farms.
- Net, trawl fragments or discarded fishing gear.
- Own mooring line, dinghy painter or towing line.
- Sheets or control lines overboard after a mistake.
- Plastic sacks, straps, tarpaulin or other floating debris.
Control the boat before clearing the propeller
A fouled propeller often means the engine cannot be trusted. The boat must become a sailboat again. If there is wind, sail to sea room. If there is depth and no room, anchor. If there is traffic, call.
- Hoist or keep enough sail to steer if conditions allow it.
- Reduce sail if someone must work on deck or below.
- Anchor early before the boat is on a lee shore or inside a harbor entrance.
- Show shapes/lights or call nearby vessels if you are not under command or restricted in ability to maneuver.
- Prepare tow gear if you may need help into harbor.
Trying to clear without diving
Sometimes the line can be freed without anyone entering the water. This is safer if it works.
- Look from the stern, swim platform or dinghy if safe.
- Use a boathook, long knife tool or hook knife if the boat is steady enough.
- Try very gentle shaft movement by hand only if the engine cannot start and the system is safe to handle.
- Do not put fingers where movement can trap them.
- If the wrap is heavy or near the shaft seal, assume inspection will be needed after clearing.
Diving is not a small decision
Diving under a boat is dangerous in waves, current, cold water, poor visibility, traffic or fatigue. It is also dangerous if the engine can be started by someone who has misunderstood the plan.
- Stop the engine and make sure nobody can start it.
- Remove the ignition key or make the start switch visibly disabled.
- Wear a lifejacket or buoyancy support only if it does not trap the diver under the boat.
- Use a safety line only if it cannot foul the propeller or trap the diver.
- Have a person watching the diver all the time.
- Do not dive if the boat is drifting into danger.
Single-handed: think very hard before going in the water
Single-handed, the risk changes completely. If you enter the water and cannot get back on board, the boat may drift away even in calm conditions. In open water there may be nobody close enough to help in time.
- Prefer sailing clear, anchoring, calling for assistance or arranging a tow before diving.
- If you must work from the water, have a real boarding method already deployed and tested.
- Use a line from yourself to the boat only if it cannot pull you under, foul the propeller or trap you.
- Do not trust a folded boarding ladder you cannot reach from the water.
- If fatigue, cold, waves or current are present, waiting for help may be the safer seamanship decision.
Tools worth having ready
The useful tool is the one you can reach before the boat is in trouble. It should be stored where crew know it is, not buried under spare sails.
Line cutters help, but do not remove the risk
A shaft or propeller line cutter can be useful. It may cut some rope or net before the engine stops. But it is not magic. It may not cut heavy gear, steel, chain, thick net, multiple wraps or something already jammed hard.
- Do not assume a line cutter has solved the problem just because the engine still turns.
- After suspected contact with gear, check vibration, thrust, shaft seal and gearbox behavior.
- If the engine was heavily loaded or stalled, inspect before trusting it for a tight harbor approach.
Fishing line can damage seals even when the engine still turns
Thin fishing line can wrap very tightly around the shaft. It can cut, melt, work into the shaft seal or create enough heat and pressure to damage rubber parts. The propeller may turn again, but the seal may already have been hurt.
- Check the shaft seal or saildrive seal immediately after clearing.
- Check again after running the engine for a few minutes.
- Look for new vibration, smell, heat, black rubber dust, water drips or rising bilge water.
- If there is any doubt, inspect properly at the next safe stop before a long motor passage.
After the line is cleared
The danger may not be over when the propeller turns again.
- Check for vibration in forward and reverse at low power first.
- Check the shaft seal or saildrive seal for water ingress.
- Check gearbox behavior and engine mounts if the engine stalled hard.
- Check bilge water level again after a few minutes.
- If you cut away fishing gear, avoid leaving loose line in the water where another boat can pick it up.
- Log the incident and inspect more carefully at the next safe stop.
Before entering harbor after a fouling
A harbor entrance is not the place to discover that the propeller still has poor thrust or the gearbox only works one way. Test before committing.
- Try ahead and astern gently in open water, with room to sail away if the engine fails again.
- Check whether the engine loads normally and the boat answers normally.
- Prepare fenders, lines and anchor earlier than usual.
- If thrust is uncertain, arrange a tow or ask harbor staff before entering a tight space.
- Tell crew what may happen if the engine fails again during the approach.
Prevention
- Keep dinghy painters short when maneuvering.
- Keep sheets and control lines out of the water.
- Slow down in fishing areas, pot fields and near mooring lines.
- Post a lookout on the bow in bad visibility, at night or in crowded pot areas.
- Plan routes around dense pot fields when local charts, pilot books or fishermen's marks make that possible.
- Be careful when reversing near floating lines; a rope that was harmless ahead can be pulled straight into the propeller astern.
- Carry a serrated knife, hook knife or purpose-made tool that can actually cut wet rope.
