Grounding And Underwater Damage
Touching bottom or hitting something is not one problem. It may be navigation, water ingress, steering, propulsion and structural damage at the same time.
The first minutes should be calm and practical: stop the damage getting worse, find out whether water is coming in, and keep enough control to make the next decision.
First Principle
First find out if the boat is still watertight
After grounding or hitting an object, it is natural to look outside first. What did we hit? Are we stuck? Can we reverse away? But the most important question may be inside the boat: is water entering?
A small leak can become serious if nobody sees it. A large leak becomes a different emergency immediately. Before spending energy on blame, charts or pride, check the bilge and the likely damage areas.
Immediate actions
- Stop the boat from making the damage worse if possible.
- Check crew for injury and keep people clipped on if conditions are poor.
- Check bilge, floorboards, keel bolts, mast step area, seacocks, shaft seal and rudder area.
- Start pumps if water is entering, but keep looking for the source.
- Check depth, tide, wind, waves, current and lee shore.
- Call early if water is entering or if the boat may be driven harder aground.
- Record position and time.
The boat may feel quiet just after grounding. Do not let that quiet moment trick you into doing nothing.
If the boat is stuck
Do not automatically use full engine power. If the keel, rudder or propeller is already damaged, heavy throttle can make it worse. If the tide is falling, the boat may soon lie over and load the rig or hull in a new way.
- Find whether the tide is rising or falling.
- Reduce sail and stop flogging loads.
- Check whether waves are pounding the hull.
- Prepare anchor or kedge if it can stop the boat moving farther into danger.
- Consider waiting for water if the boat is stable and not leaking.
- Ask for local help before the situation becomes harder.
If the boat floats free
Floating free does not mean nothing happened. A boat can come off a rock or sandbank and still have keel, rudder, propeller, shaft, saildrive or seacock damage.
- Move to safe water slowly.
- Check steering through a small range first, then more if it feels normal.
- Check engine, shaft or saildrive carefully before using power hard.
- Keep watching the bilge for at least the next hours.
- Plan a haul-out or diver inspection if impact was hard.
After hitting a floating object
A log, container, fishing gear, buoy, rope or net can damage the boat without warning. The first sign may be a bang, a vibration, a sudden stop, a strange steering feel, or an engine that loses power.
- Slow down and keep the boat under control.
- Check water ingress first.
- Check whether steering is normal.
- Check whether something is wrapped around propeller, rudder or keel.
- Do not put a person in the water unless conditions are genuinely safe.
- If diving is needed, stop the engine, remove keys and make sure nobody can start it.
Keel and hull signs
Keel damage is not always obvious from inside. Still, some signs deserve attention.
- New water near keel bolts or grid structure.
- Cracks in interior liner, tabbing or floor structure.
- Doors or floorboards that no longer fit normally.
- New noises when the boat moves in waves.
- Rust marks, movement or changed appearance around keel bolts.
Rudder and steering signs
Rudder damage can be dangerous because the boat may still steer at low load, then fail when load increases.
- Steering suddenly heavier or lighter than normal.
- Wheel or tiller not centered as before.
- Vibration or knocking from rudder area.
- Water near rudder stock or steering gear.
- Autopilot working harder than before.
If water is entering
Move quickly, but keep the order clear. Find, slow, pump, communicate and prepare.
- Find the leak source if possible: seacock, hose, keel area, shaft seal, rudder stock, hull crack or damaged fitting.
- Use plugs, soft wood, cloth, collision mat, cushions, sailcloth or pressure from inside to slow the leak.
- Use electric and manual pumps, but do not rely only on pumps if the hole can be reduced.
- Call early with position, water ingress rate and number of people on board.
- Prepare lifejackets, grab bag, EPIRB/PLB and abandon-ship equipment, even if you hope not to need it.

After the incident
- Write down what happened, position, speed, depth, tide and weather.
- Photograph visible damage and bilge areas.
- Mark any leak level or crack length so you can see if it changes.
- Inspect lines, keel, rudder, propeller, shaft, seacocks and pumps again later.
- Do not continue offshore without understanding the damage.
- Use professional inspection when the impact was hard or uncertain.
The boat may need to survive the next weather, not only the next hour.
