Harbor Entry At Night Or Bad Visibility
The entrance is often the narrowest, shallowest and least forgiving part of the passage. Darkness and poor visibility remove margin.
A tired skipper near land can be more dangerous than a rested skipper offshore. The safe answer may be to slow down, wait, anchor or stand off until the picture is clear.
First Principle
Near land, uncertainty becomes expensive
Offshore, a small navigation uncertainty may be manageable. Near rocks, breakwaters, fishing gear, current, traffic and shallow water, the same uncertainty can become dangerous quickly.
Night and bad visibility do not only make it harder to see. They also make it harder to judge speed, distance, waves, lights and stress. The skipper may feel almost finished with the passage, but the most precise work may still be ahead.
Before the approach
- Study the entrance before arrival, not while already inside it.
- Check lights, leading lines, sector lights, buoys, depth contours and hazards.
- Check tide, current, swell direction and breaking bar risk.
- Prepare lines, fenders, anchor and spotlight before the entrance.
- Reduce sail early or prepare to motor-sail under control.
- Wake crew before the hard part if you have crew.
- Decide the abort point before entering.
Lights can confuse
Harbor lights rarely appear alone. Shore lights, road lights, fishing boats, marina lights and background buildings can hide or imitate navigation lights.
- Identify light character, color and period, not only "a light over there".
- Use more than one clue: bearing, depth, chart, distance and visual shape.
- Be careful with bright deck lights that damage night vision.
- Do not enter because one light seems right if the rest of the picture is wrong.
Depth is a safety voice
The depth sounder can warn that the real world and the expected world do not match.
- Know the expected depth before the approach.
- Set depth alarm if useful, but do not rely on it alone.
- Slow down if depth changes faster than expected.
- Remember tide height and chart datum.
Speed control
Speed should be low enough that the boat can stop, turn or anchor before danger. But the boat still needs steerage and control in wind and current.
- Do not carry more sail than needed into a tight entrance.
- Keep enough power for steering if motoring.
- Have the anchor ready, not buried.
- Do not let a following sea push the boat into the entrance faster than planned.
- Keep one person looking out, not only looking at the plotter.
Have an exit strategy for the approach
A sailboat has no brake. The boat stops, turns and accelerates according to hull speed, wind, current, waves, prop wash, rudder angle and sail load. In daylight and flat water this may feel obvious. At night, close to rocks or breakwaters, it becomes a safety issue.
Before the narrow part, decide what you will do if the approach is wrong. If you are too fast, where can you slow, turn away or circle? If you are too slow, can you still keep steerage? If the wind, current or swell sets you sideways, where is the safe water for a second attempt?
- Make the first approach with enough room to abandon it cleanly.
- Do not let pride turn a poor approach into a forced entrance.
- Keep enough speed for steering, but not so much that the boat cannot stop or turn before danger.
- Use a clear call such as "abort" or "stand off" so crew know the plan has changed.
- If the picture is not stable, go out again, wait, or anchor where it is safe.
A second approach is usually cheaper than repairing a mistake made in the last boat length.
Current and wind
Current across an entrance can set the boat sideways. Wind can hide this because the bow may look aimed correctly while the boat is sliding.
- Watch transits and bearings for sideways movement.
- Allow for leeway and current before the narrow part.
- Be careful entering with strong wind behind you.
- Know whether turning around will be possible after the entrance.
Traffic
Fishing vessels, ferries, workboats and unlit small craft may all be near the entrance. They may know the local water better, but they may not know what you are doing.
- Monitor VHF on the local channel if known.
- Use AIS and radar if available, but keep visual lookout.
- Make early clear movements.
- Call harbor control or traffic if appropriate.
Bad visibility
Fog, heavy rain, smoke or spray can make a familiar entrance unfamiliar. Plotter confidence can become dangerous if the crew stops looking and listening.
- Use radar if available and you are practiced with it.
- Slow down and make sound signals where required.
- Post a lookout with warm clothing and clear instructions.
- Keep the cockpit quiet enough to hear engines, surf and signals.
- If uncertain, wait outside safe water until visibility improves.
The abort plan
An abort plan is not pessimism. It is how the skipper avoids continuing into a bad entrance only because turning around was not thought through.
- Where can we turn around?
- Where can we anchor?
- Where can we wait offshore?
- What depth or light mistake means stop?
- Who calls the abort if the skipper is overloaded?
If there is no acceptable abort plan, the entrance may not be acceptable in the present conditions.
When to wait outside
- The entrance is unfamiliar and lights are unclear.
- The crew is exhausted.
- Engine, steering or electronics are unreliable.
- There is breaking water, strong cross-current or poor depth information.
- Arrival would be in heavy rain, fog or darkness when daylight is near.
- The skipper is no longer making calm decisions.
Standing off can feel frustrating, but frustration is not danger. Rocks, surf and breakwaters are.
