Man Overboard And Staying On Board
The best man-overboard recovery is the one that never has to happen.
Falling overboard is not only a water problem. It is a time problem, a visibility problem, a fatigue problem and often a recovery problem.
High-Stress Use
The best MOB recovery is not falling overboard. If it happens, the first seconds decide whether the person stays visible and reachable.
A person in the water is small. A moving boat is large, noisy and quickly gone. Even in daylight, the head of a person in waves can disappear between crests. At night it may be visible only when a light, reflector or beacon helps.
This is why I do not like treating MOB only as a recovery problem. It is first a staying-on-board problem.
Jacklines and tethers are most useful when they are already rigged and easy to use. If the boat is rolling hard and the deck is wet, the best time to rig them has already passed.
A lifejacket is not useful in the locker. A harness is not useful if the tether is not attached. A light or AIS MOB beacon is not useful if it is not on the person who may fall.
The first few seconds matter. The boat still has speed, the person may still be close, and the crew still has a visual reference. Confusion at this point costs distance.

There is no single perfect man-overboard turn for every boat, crew and wind angle. The useful question is simpler: which maneuver can this crew perform under control today, on this boat, with this sail plan?
On a reach or downwind course, an accidental or rushed gybe can be dangerous. The boom can cross hard, the crew can be hit, and the boat may accelerate while people are still confused. In some conditions, a wider tack through the wind, often called a Q-turn or granny tack, can be safer than a gybe because the boom comes across with more control. The cost is that it needs more sea room and more time.
The best recovery maneuver is the one that keeps the boat controlled and the person in sight. A textbook maneuver that the crew cannot perform under stress is not a real plan.
The first job in cold or rough water is not heroic swimming. The first job is breathing and staying afloat.
The crew must avoid turning one emergency into two. A panicked recovery can put more people in the water.
Finding the person is only half the job. Getting a wet, tired, cold or injured person back on board can be very difficult, especially with high freeboard or a weak crew.
A recovery system that lives at the bottom of a locker is not a recovery system. It should be reachable quickly and understood by more than one person.
If a singlehanded sailor goes overboard while the boat sails on, the normal MOB plan may not exist. The skipper is both casualty and crew. That is why prevention must be stronger.
This is not about being afraid. It is about accepting that singlehanded sailing has fewer backups, so the safety margin must be larger.
When sailing alone far from land or traffic, an emergency signal is not the same as immediate rescue. A VHF Mayday may not be heard by anyone close enough to help. An AIS MOB beacon may only be useful if another vessel is nearby and receiving it. A PLB or EPIRB can start the search-and-rescue chain, but the nearest ship, helicopter or aircraft may still be far away.
In some ocean areas, even if the alert is received and your position is known, it can take many hours or even days before help can physically reach you. Weather, darkness, sea state, distance, available rescue units and nearby commercial traffic all decide the real time.
That is why singlehanded MOB prevention must be harsher than normal crew thinking. The beacon helps others find the emergency. It does not keep your head above water, stop the boat, or lift you back on board.
This is one of the worst singlehanded situations: you did not disappear from the boat, but you are outside it, held by the tether. That sounds better than being lost in the water, but it can still become fatal if the boat keeps moving.
If the boat has speed, the water load on your body can be enormous. Breathing, thinking, reaching a knife, climbing, or unclipping may become very difficult. A short tether that prevents you from going over the side is far better than a long tether that lets you fall into the water and then drags you beside the hull.
If I had to choose only one improvement for singlehanded sailing, it would be this: arrange jacklines, clip-on points and tether length so I cannot get over the rail in the first place during normal cockpit and deck work.
Once the body is outside the boat, every solution becomes harder. The tether may be loaded. The hull may be smooth. The ladder may be aft while you are hanging amidships. The boat may still be sailing. The lifejacket may make it harder to climb. The first design goal should therefore be: stay on deck, not just stay connected to the boat.
This is not as dramatic as a rescue gadget, but it is the most important part. A system that lets you hang outside the boat has already failed once.
A boarding method is not ready if it can only be lowered by someone on deck. For singlehanded sailing, at least one method should be usable from the water or from outside the rail.
The hard part is not only climbing. The hard part is climbing while the boat still has speed, sails drawing, waves moving the hull, and the tether pulling at a bad angle.
Every boat is different, but the useful equipment has one common feature: it is already rigged, reachable, and tested before the fall.

It is easy to believe you can climb back aboard until you try it wearing real sailing clothes and a lifejacket. Test this in warm, calm water with another person, a dinghy or a safe dock nearby. Do not test it alone.
This test often gives uncomfortable answers. That is useful. The time to find out that the ladder cannot be reached is not at night, alone, with the boat moving.
A MOB plan should be simple enough that tired crew can do it. Practice does not need to be dramatic. It needs to answer practical questions.
The drill should reveal what is slow, hidden or misunderstood. Fix those things while the weather is calm.
