Squalls At Night Under Sail

A night squall is dangerous because it arrives when the boat is harder to see, the deck is harder to work on, and the skipper may be tired or asleep.

The best squall action is often done before the first gust: reduce sail, close the boat, clear the cockpit and make the first wake-up action simple.

Night Rule

Do not carry daylight sail area into uncertain night weather

A sail plan that feels exciting in daylight can become a trap at night. If a squall arrives while the skipper is below, half asleep or in foul-weather gear, the boat may be overpowered before anyone reaches the deck.

Warning signs

  • Fast pressure drop or unstable pressure trend.
  • Dark cloud line, lightning, sudden cool air or smell of rain.
  • Wind shift ahead of the rain.
  • Radar rain cells or AIS/radio reports from nearby boats.
  • Sea surface darkening or changing texture under the cloud.

Prepare before resting

  • Reef before sleeping if squalls are possible.
  • Do not sleep with Code 0, gennaker or spinnaker unless the risk is consciously accepted.
  • Close hatches, ports and cockpit lockers.
  • Clear loose lines and gear from cockpit and deck.
  • Put headlamp, harness, tether, gloves, VHF and knife within reach.

When the gust hits

First keep the boat under control. Do not start a complicated sail operation while the boat is broaching, gybing or rounding up hard.

Rain and visibility

Heavy rain can hide ships, lights, buoys and land. It can also flatten the water visually while the wind is still strong.

  • Use radar if available and already understood.
  • Check AIS, but remember that not everything transmits AIS.
  • Use navigation lights and sound signals according to the situation.
  • Slow down if visibility and sea room demand it.

Lightning

Lightning has no perfect small-boat answer. The useful action is preparation: know the boat's grounding/bonding arrangement, keep crew away from unnecessary metal contact, protect backup electronics where practical, and avoid being on deck unless needed for safety.

The Sensors module is where lightning-risk cues belong in my system, together with pressure trend and other warning signs. It can support awareness, but it does not make the boat lightning-safe.

A second handheld VHF, a separate GPS, spare headlamp batteries and small backup electronics may survive better if they are kept in a simple Faraday-cage-like place. A dry metal oven is often used for this, or a metal box, but it is not a guarantee. The important point is to keep independent backup equipment protected and easy to find after the strike.

If the boat is hit, first deal with crew injury, fire, smoke and immediate electrical danger. As soon as that is under control, check for water ingress as a high priority. Look around keel bolts and keel fasteners, around the mast step and compression post, and anywhere the lightning may have exited through the hull below the waterline. Sometimes the hole is small. Sometimes it can be catastrophic.

Prepare before the dark cloud is overhead

At night, the skipper needs more margin than in daylight. A slower, simpler boat is usually safer than a fast boat that demands a perfect wake-up.
